Bah!

First of all thank you to those of you who commented to answer my questions about photosharing sites. I have yet to make any decisions at all, but I still very much appreciate it!

Life is both crazy and dull at the moment. Mum's just moved, so I'm at her new place and surrounded by boxes. On the up side we know where most of my stuff is.

Also she's just got two kittens! They are both tabbies and look very much alike - although we've figured out how to tell them apart already, so that's good. They are very cute and are filled with personality. They are making me sneeze, which is very lame (damn you allergies!), but I don't mind too much because they are awesome.

Also the internet at Mum's is being all glitchy. Very lame. But I've been able to mostly get things done. And I can always go to the library to do faster, more reliable interneting. (*is at library now*)

I've been having a bit of a Merlin revival (does it count as a revival if the series is still running?) and rewatching the episodes and reading fic and just generally crushing over Bradley James and Colin Morgan who are some of the only actors my age I find ridiculously attractive (also hilarious, silly etc). On that note I just used some birthday money to buy myself series 1 on DVD. It should be arriving in the mail some time next week. The amount I am looking forward to the special features is probably not healthy.

For your time, because it makes me smile every time:

HA!

Youtube has lured me in again. I'm trolling around looking at interviews etc from the cast of Merlin. They look like they have so much fun.

This is still making me laugh:

Yay Sports!

Today I went downtown to do a bunch of things that needed doing including getting some passport photos done (they look appropriately sickly and disgruntled by the way - I know you were worried that I'd actually look like myself, but never fear!) and while I was waiting for them to get processed I went into the used CD/DVD/etc store and browsed around to see if there were any good deals.

And I ended up finding the entire series of Sports Night for $30.

I am of two minds about this.

1) It was only $30 and I have actually tried looking for this before only to find that it was not in stock anywhere and about $75 even if it was in stock. So cheaper than expected and also available which is a win in both categories! (Obviously I bought it. Let's face it I have no self control.)

2) I'm trying to be good with my money and not spend it when it's unnecessary! Of course I fail rather remarkably, but I am currently consoling myself with the fact that I did not buy NCIS season 4 despite its $25 price tag. NCIS will be available when I finally have money to spend on it (and Dad likes NCIS and is fairly likely to buy it for me as a Christmas or Birthday gift... he's predictable like that, but I'm not complaining). So see! I have self control. I am prioritizing my intake of awesome DVDs at good prices! I'm a smart consumer! Filled with self control...

Oh who am I kidding?

In other news my love of Bradley James (Arthur on Merlin) is returning thanks to the new episodes of Merlin coming out. Part of my brain always says "But he's blonde" when I'm oogling, but really it's the shoulders (mmm... shoulders...) and the ridiculous faces which I love. For evidence see [livejournal.com profile] face_of_bradley.

Awesome Females

So I’ve been thinking a bunch about characters lately (clearly now that I don't have schoolwork to occupy my brain I have to analyze something else) and what makes me like one more than another. I think what I like best in a character is the same thing I like best in stories, which makes sense because I’ll love almost any story if I love the characters enough. I like stereotypes that don’t quite fit. That’s my favourite. And I think that even more than that I like the dumb jock who isn’t. So Daniel Brady from Shadow Unit, Colby Granger from Numb3rs, Tony DiNozzo from NCIS, Dean Winchester from Supernatural, and even to a certain extent Arthur from Merlin. This is probably why I like TV so much actually, since most of the good shows that last take stereotypes and then make them more interesting. I have no problem with this because I like it.

But most of my favourites are all men, I realise. So I got to thinking about why. Part of it is that there are usually way more men than women in the shows I watch. I like SciFi and Cop shows the best so that makes sense because there are more men than women in the military and the police. But even the women they do have just aren’t as interesting most of the time. Sometimes they’re just there to be pretty, sometimes they’re around to be love interests (which is almost invariably lame), and sometimes they’re there to be the strong female character who can do everything and do everything well because women are clearly as good as men at all these things (also remarkably lame). And I understand where the writers are coming from, because people (and not just women) have been sidelined so much in television until recently. A lot of new shows have over-arching storylines and character development and that is awesome. But women are hard because people are hard, and I think a lot of TV writers are more comfortable writing men than women – I’m more comfortable writing men than women.

Anyway, instead of going on and on about gender!fail and depressing everyone - not in the least myself because I’m not sure I approve of all this binary gender business anyway – I decided to make a list (with reasons) of some of my favourite female characters in TV. Here is a celebration of doing things right.
