Wedding Socks!

So this afternoon I gave Spicy J his socks which means that I am done all of the wedding socks! So As promised here're the photos of all socks I knit this summer. And they're all completed within five months of the weddings! I've heard people say that if you're hand-making something for the wedding you have to have it done either within six months or a year - so I succeeded whichever way you slice it! Woo!

Also I managed to knit all four of these socks based on the recipients' shoe sizes instead of a measurement of their actual feet. I'm assured that they all fit well - so that's a relief!

Photographic evidence:

I met Spicy J first because he was in my department at Grad School, and then D because she was his girlfriend. Both of them are lovely and I thoroughly enjoy watching hockey games with them and bickering about whether the Flames (boo!) or Canucks (yay!) are going to win. Their wedding was in June, and I decided to knit socks for them only a few weeks beforehand so I decided to ask them for input on what type of socks they'd like. That's actually how they ended up being the last two socks I ended up knitting. D requested something in yellow or green or purple, and Spicy J asked for something in a dark colour.

These were knit using Cookie A's pattern Kai-Mei. And Cascade Heritage Silk Paints yarn - which is merino wool and silk mixed together. The yarn is awesome. It feels really soft and is super easy to work with.

These are a modified version of Karen S. Lauger's Viking Socks. I modified the pattern to work for toe-up socks instead of cuff-down, and also to work with J's big man-feet. And I added a couple of small cables on either side of the main big one. These were an easy knit and pretty fun.

A and A got married in August and they called it the A Team Wedding because they are great. I know both of them from living at Green College together. I didn't let them have any say in what socks they would get, mostly because I was too impatient to start. I extremely subtly not subtly at all asked Angie what size feet they had while we were out to dinner in June, but she didn't remember at all - so my nefarious plan totally worked! Ha!

This is another one of Cookie A's patterns. And this one is called Angee.

These are the socks that made me decide to knit socks as wedding gifts. A is studying biodiversity and so he loves looking at bugs and plants and things. The moment I saw Vintage Purls' pattern Bug Out I knew that they'd be perfect for him. I specifically picked a purpley-blue colour for the beetles because it reminded me of the shimmer you see on some real bugs. These socks were the most difficult of the four of them. I'd never done colourwork socks before and it was a steep learning curve. I think I had to rip back different parts of that first sock I don't know how many times. And I made sure to get A to try the first one on before I started the second. There's so little stretch in them because of the colourwork that I was worried they wouldn't fit at all. But thankfully they do! And A has already declared them his favourite socks, because he's a dear.

So I finished four sets of socks! Two lace, one cabled, and one colourwork. It was fun and they were very well received. I still like sock knitting, but I must admit that I'm not in a rush to start another sock project.
