A Note on Dig Accommodations
Jul. 9th, 2011 08:07 pmSo two years ago (when
vermin_disciple was at Vagnari) we lived in the Via Matera apartment and the Via Belli apartments. Both Vermin and I were at Via Belli (which is how we became friends). Via Matera is a shit hole – bad electricity, bad showers, dust everywhere, no real kitchen – but it’s our shit hole, and it’s really not that bad. You have a roof over your head, and a decent cross breeze etc. I have a very soft spot in my heart for Via Matera. Via Belli, which was unfinished two years ago, I remember walking in and thinking to myself “This is too good for us.” There are things that are lame about the apartment – there is very little airflow, for some reason only one of the bathrooms has a sink and there was no kitchen (just pipes sticking out of the wall for later installation), the radiators hadn’t been installed yet and so every room had a couple of copper pipes sticking out of the wall ready to impale you – but the walls were white (a very bad choice for a group of dirty archaeologists) and there were two stand up showers which actually got hot water.
Admittedly I’ve never stayed in a tent while digging, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it. And really when your season only lasts a month then the crappiest apartments are the way to go.
This year we’re staying in the Via Belli apartments again. But this time they’re finished and they’re furnished too. It’s ridiculous. We have a kitchen, with a fridge we didn’t have to carry up the four flights of stairs. We have a working elevator and air conditioning. Each room has a bigger-than-double bed in it and the bigger rooms at the back have two single cots as well. The smaller bathroom still doesn’t have a sink (I honestly don’t know). But everything else is awesome. And there are cleaning ladies coming in once a week to change our sheets! (Probably a good thing – because they are white.) It’s kinda stupidly ridiculous. And a bunch of the students are complaining because they all still brought mattresses and things and now don’t need to use them. I want to just say “no! This is too good for us! Why are we here?” But at the same time I’m enjoying sleeping in a bed (even if I have to share it with Iris). But yeah. Apartments are weird.
In other news the dig continues on a pace. Jim and I have to have a powwow at some time today so that we can make sure we have a plan of attack ready for starting digging again tomorrow morning. But that’ll have to wait until after he watches the Formula 1 race (I am greatly amused). I’m starting to feel a little better about this supervisor business. And I don’t think I’ve screwed up yet, so there’s always that.
Hope all’s well with you guys! Ciao Ciao!
