Today has been pretty solid, all things considered. I've been chugging away at my last paper and it's getting pretty close to being done (plus I've still got over 24 hours before it's due - I'm golden). And I went to the dentist.

Dentists are balls you might say (and I would agree with you). But get this: I don't have any cavities!!! So yes, Dentists suck. But after all the dental death I had to go through last year, not having a cavity is kinda amazing! My are generally filled with suckiness, but apparently not today! So that's worthy of celebration!

And to make things more better: I got my Old Navy order in the mail today - a week early! New clothes are exciting!

Also: the Ice Birds' last game is tonight! And I've roped a whole bunch of people into coming and cheering us on, so that should be lots of fun!

Finally, I've also just been invited to a Wedding! This is the first time I've been invited to a wedding for someone who is not directly related to me. So I'm going! Even though it'll be a bit of a trek to get there. Its especially cool that I got invited because I know that they didn't have much space, so only a few of us got invites at all from our group of friends. But enough people I know are going that it should be fun even if we barely get to say hi to the happy couple. I'm really looking forward to it!

I managed to get to campus by 10 am on a Sunday.

That's enough of an accomplishment for today right?

# reasons why this paper isn't finished yet.

(Even though THAT DAMN PAPER is not yet done.)

- Laundry: washed, dried and folded
- Sent the last of the Christmas packages (everything else will be brought with me)
- Not quite 700 words of boring boringness (although I am going to try and write some more this evening)
- Figured out how to buy a single Canucks game streaming live on the internet.
- Remembered - after purchasing the next game that the Canucks vs Senators game (which is on right now) which I meant to buy is actually on CBC so it's A) not available on the fancy streaming (which actually would have been nice since the CBC stream isn't very high quality), and B) is Free streaming live on CBC.
- *headdesk*
- Inadvertently bought the streaming of the Canucks-Blue Jackets Game on Tuesday. (So I guess I'm watching that game.)
- Minesweeper. So much Minesweeper.

Plan for tomorrow:
- finish the first draft of THAT DAMN PAPER. (It's only 1 business day later than my original plan.) I'm already about half-way done in terms of wordcount and probably about a third through in terms of content, so it's more than doable.

Whine whine. Bitch Bitch. Moan Moan.

Why is it already 3pm and I still have a thousand words to write?

Paper, I hate you.

Celtic Scholars, please stop being so annoying.

So everyone got an extension on this paper until Monday apparently. I'm still going to try and get it done as soon as possible, because I've got about ten billion things to do, and everything else will get delayed if I leave this lying around. Also I don't want to lose my momentum. So I'm going to keep working on it as much as I can. But I'm going to take it easy today, and hopefully I will feel better soon.

Every now and then, usually when I'm writing a paper, I wonder to myself why (oh why!?!?) the hell do I want to go into academics anyway. I really dislike writing papers. I like the research and the finding out new shit part. And I like thinking about cool things (like Roman Britain), but when I have to smush it down onto the page my brain just rebels. And I get sick, or I go completely brain dead. Because NO! These ideas can't fit into the boundaries of an eight and a half by eleven sheet of paper. They're nebulous and far reaching. Whole towns buried under piles of dirt and thousands of years of other people's lives.

If I smash my head against the keyboard will all my thoughts get into the word document?

I almost have 6 pages. Here is me 1/4 of the way done. Chugging tea and cough drops.

Now that the day is (sort of) done, I've handed in two papers, and did my Translation assignment/presentation thing for Latin. I'm now done two of my five classes.

YAY!!!!

All that I have left for this term is my Greek exam (death), my paper and presentation (on the same subject) for Latin, and my Roman History Exam (I could write this in my sleep... and will still get a decent mark if I don't show up).

And to celebrate the last day of classes I am not going to do any schoolwork tonight!

I did my Latin Sight Passage for the Honours Exams today. I am now 1/4 done the exam portion of my Honours degree. (That is of course, assuming that I passed.) I felt decently good about it. I couldn't tell where the piece I had to translate was from, but it was about Jason and the Argonauts, and the stuff about boats leads me to believe that Dr. O'B picked that passage for me on purpose. It's exactly his sense of humour.

I do want to know where that passage was from though, because it was one of those passages which helps to remind me that I actually do know what the hell I'm doing. I could see the grammatical constructions even though they were basically lying on top of each other, and I knew most of the vocabulary. Also it was prose instead of poetry.

But I'm done!

And now I've got to write a paper for tomorrow. C says I should wait until after hockey (I think he's mostly joking) and I totally could finish it afterwards (I've currently got an A+ in this class, and I haven't been putting a lot of effort into it), but I might write up an outline or something. And I should get a start on my Latin homework since my brother and some other folks'll be in town this weekend (yay!) and I probably won't have time to do anything then.

Also I got a paper back the other day and in it I made the very best typo ever:

Instead of "grove of the Furies" I wrote "groove".

It was circled with a big smiley-face.

:)

The paper is done.

So am I.

It sucks.

I'm going to go to bed.

Brain-dead paper writting = fun.

That is a total lie.

Two hours and two pages to go before due time....
aderam: (Death Star - dreamerland)
So I agonized a little bit and then decided not to do the paper that's due tomorrow. This isn't as crazy as it sounds - honest. You see for my Roman history class there are four essay topics for the semester and I have to write on three of them. My plan was to do the first one so that I would still have a free skip later on, but I'm feeling kinda stuffed up and brain-dead. And also I'm just not interested in writing about how Suetonius' place in history effected his opinion and protrayal of Julius Caesar. Partially because I think it's bloody obvious (and I always feel like an idiot when I write papers that I think are obvious, even if they're exactly what the prof wants), and partially because it'll be nick-picky and boring to flick through fifty pages of Suetonius' Life of Julius Caesar to find good examples to proove said obviousness. And I do think that all three other topics are interesting:

Topic B: How would it seem to people at the time that Augustus had restored the Republic?
Topic C: Why are Trajan and Livy's Letters important as historical documents?
Topic D: Why would contemporary Roman's like the character of Lucius in Apuleius' The Golden Ass?

See? They're all much cooler than flipping through Suetonius to find proof that he's way more comfortable with one-man-rule than Republican Romans (after all it`s not like he`s lived in the Empire under good, solid Emperors for his whole life).

In other news I just got hit with the cold that's been going around. It sucks balls. In fact it sucks bälle. But on the up-side, L is making chicken soup for the purpose of curing colds. She says it is magical Jew-Soup and will fix us all (her included). I am very much looking forward to eating some.

In the mean-time I think I`ll do some readings for class (and not that paper I`m not going to do!) and drink a bunch of mint tea and maybe watch some television. Oh TeeVee - how I love thee.

Sometimes I really hate school. As you can probably guess a) this is one of those times, and b) I am writing a paper.

I currently have 1543 words of a 2000-word paper completed, which is really good because all I managed to get down yesterday was about 400 - ultimately not significantly more than the introduction.

I wish this history of seafaring class wasn't so disappointing. I mean, I love boats! (I am in fact hearing S's impression of me in my head at the moment: *in a high pitched British accent, because that's how S does a female voice... any female voice* "Boats! Latin! Boats and Latin and Sci Fi!")

Do you think that my prof would accept scoffing at Rediker and ogling Vickers' pie charts as "situating the book in the context of other work in the field" and "critical analysis" respectively?

I am leaning towards yes...

However, I did spend about five minutes straight laughing at some lines over in [livejournal.com profile] troyswann's journal in which Aristotle referred to Plato as "Form Boy" (is it still a Platonic Dialogue if Plato was not the one to write it? Huh? I ask you THAT!), so I suspect that my rocker is decidedly off at this stage in my life.

*laughs like a drain. An insane, sentient drain. (that may be redundant)*

The problem with writing research papers is that it is so easy to get distracted while you're researching for them - at least if you're interested in the subject. I'm currently writing a paper on how Ammianus Marcellinus depicts the Emperor Julian as a Roman Hero and I'm reading Ammianus Marcellinus and the Representation of Historical Reality by Timothy D. Barnes, and it is such a lovely read and so interesting that I would be happy to read all of it. The only problem is that it's not all relevant to my topic. Also I'm a slow reader. (This is more than one problem.)

He has a whole chapter on how Ammianus deals with Empresses and Eunuchs! Eunuchs! (I'm actually interested in reading more about Ammianus' treatment of eunuchs even though this has absolutely nothing to do with my topic. He really hates them, and every time they come up he's always very negative towards them. It's wonderful!)

In conclusion - I am such a nerd.

Huzzah!

I totally get to write Fanfic for my Roman History class! Instead of a final paper we get to write a Roman History play using a scene (or a few scenes) from one of the Ancient historians we've been reading. And then we have to explain our choices and what they mean and all that, but I get to write a Roman History play!!!

This is so cool. I love Dr. C!

I might write about Cicero's orations against Catalina, but from Catalina's perspective. I love those speeches. Cicero was ON FIRE!

Classics is so great.... La, La - la la!

Why are conclusions so haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard?

I've completed my paper that's due tomorrow except for the conclusion (in great time too! Sure it was only 1500 words but still) and I can't figure out how to write the conclusion. I've been sitting here for the past half-hour procrastinating precisely because I can't figure out what to write.

Conclusions Suck.

I think I will try not to write

ETA: HUzzah! Done! And before eleven o'clock too!
