It rained a whole lot today, a torrent that I was very happy to be inside the Tower and watching. In any case it ended up inspiring this little piece that might end up part of a story that I want to tell that's set at King's and deals with Magic and Learning of all types. This just deals with people and rain.
It was raining. Big forceful drops that hit the ground as if revenging the death of a loved one. THe grey sky lowered at the edges bringing the horizon closer by shrouding the world in the damp mist thrown up by the raindrops. The pidgeons pulled their heads as close to their necks as possible turning them into wet lumps of feathers and the trees sang with the crackling of wet leaves dancing in the wind.
Connor loved every minute of it. He walked slowly through the downpour watching the drips collect and fall off the edge of his worn, yellow foul-weather gear hood as he went to dinner in Prince Hall. Andrew and Simon ran by without shoes or raincoats and they yelled a greeting to him as the passed.
Inside Prince Hall the charged, humid atmosphere prevailed. Raincoats lay spralled like wet leaves among the bags at the entrance and the students in line or at the tables were talking rapidly as if they wouldn't be able to speak after the meal was done. Connor dumped his coat with the others and showed his meal card to the employee at the door before grabbing a tray and moving to the hot food line.
Magda, still wearing her green raincoat and dripping on the floor, was at the end of the line when he got there. "Hey," he said and he couldn't quite help the grin that had spread across his face as the first few drops fell from the sky and then decided it liked being where it was. Magda shot him her usual glower but her mouth quirked a little at the corners and totally ruined her image.
"Hey," she said back. "And whipe that smile off your face, it's meatloaf."
"I like their meatloaf," Connor retorted his grin not shifting an inch.
"Hopeless," Magda muttered and turned to follow the moving line.
"And, it's raining," Connor added not wanting the conversation - if you could call it that - to end there.
"I hadn't noticed," Magda commented and the air around them got distinctly drier. The edge of her coat dripped on Connor's shoe for emphasis.
"You know," Connor said his grin downgrading to a smile in the face of Magda's cynicism. "If you hate rain so much why don't you just take the tunnels from Alex instead of going outside?"
"Because," Magda answered and somehow she managed to fit her entire argument into that one word.
"I see," he replied and then shifted his attention to today's dinner options.
"I'm making myself a sandwich," Magda said nose wrinkling at the food as she left without getting anything.
Connor got two helpings of meatloaf even though he had to go back for the second. And he enjoyed them, just like he enjoyed the rain.
