My Star Trek Renaissance is still going strong. Since shortly after the release of XI I've been following [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek and filled with joy at all the wonderful fannish things we've been doing as a community. (The other week there was a hostile take-over by our Mods from the Mirror universe and everyone who refused to grow facial hair was forced to spend time in the agony booth - I was really impressed by some of the icons that people managed to give goatees.)

Anyway, back at Hallowe'en everyone was posting pictures of their Trek Uniforms which they'd made for the holiday (or for cons or whatever). And I have uniform envy. But I also know that if I had a Star Trek uniform I would almost never wear it, and that would be sad. I sort of solved this by getting a yellow hoodie and sewing on a command insignia (and I love it and wear it all the time so that totally works!).

Then I saw the Kirk and Spock bears which the Vermont Teddy Bear Company makes, both of which are ridiculously cute and I kind of want them despite the price tag. (Did you see Spock's ears?!?!)

Somewhere along the line I put these two covetous thoughts together and came up with a brilliant plan: I could knit a uniform for my own teddy bear.

So I did. And I'm quite proud of myself. And I think he looks quite sharp.

So with no further ado, allow me to introduce Frobisher (known as Frob to those of us who have known him since Frobisher was too much of a mouthful). He was named after the Arctic Explorer - a perfect candidate for Starfleet. Also I think it's rather obvious that he belongs in the command track.

Pattern

After dicking about on Ravelry for a while I realized that even though it was fairly easy to find patterns for teddy bear sweaters they wouldn't necessarily be Frob-sized patterns. So I got together my courage and figured out a pattern all by myself. I'm actually quite please with how it turned out.

Here's the pattern. Feel free to use it if you like, but I'm mostly writing this out for my own records, so I don't claim coherency (although I'm willing to answer any questions you might have).

Using a light worsted weight yarn and 4.25mm needles (4s or 4.5s would be fine, it just so happens that my favourite bamboo ones are weird and in-between) CO 72 sts and work in the round.
Work 3 rows of K2P2 ribbing.
Working in stockinette until you reach the Bear's armpit (I didn't count how many stitches this was).
Divide the stitches into the front and back sections. 30 sts for the front and 42 sts for the back.
Hold the stitches for the back on 2 needles while you work the front.

Front
*Decrease 3 stitches at the beginning of next two rows.
K1, ssk, K to 3 sts before the end, K2tog, K1.
P all sts.
K1, ssk, K to 3 sts before the end, K2tog, K1.* - 20 stitches.
Work 5 rows in stockinette ending on a wrong-side row.
Neckline shaping:
K8, BO4, K8.
P8.
**K1, ssk, K to end.
P all sts.**
Repeat from * to * until 4 sts remain.
Work two more rows.
Hold sts. - Break yarn with a good sized tail.
This forms the right side of the neckline. You should still have 8 sts on the needle to make the left side. Do the same thing, but opposite so that the decreases are along the neckline - use K2tog instead of ssk.

Back
Work from * to * as for front. - 32 sts.
Work 9 rows in stockinette.
Neckline shaping:
K8, BO 16, K8.
P8.
**K1, ssk, K to end.
P all sts.**
Repeat twice more. - 5 sts remain.
Hold sts and break yarn with a decent tail.
Do the same for the right side neckline, as you did for the front.

Graft shoulder seams together. I suggest tying a knot with the tails afterwards. You should now have a tank-top like thing.

Sleeves - make two
CO 32 sts.
Work 1 row of K1P1 ribbing.
Work 3 rows of stockinette.
Rank Insignia:
P all sts.
P all sts.
K all sts.
K2P2 around.
K3, P2K2 around.
K all sts.
P all sts.
P all sts.
Work 18 rows of stockinette.
Armhole shaping:
BO 3 at the beginning of the next two rows.
*K1, ssk, K to 3 sts before the end, K2tog, K1.
P all sts.*
Repeat * to * until 8 sts remain.
BO remaining 8 sts.

Sew sleeves onto body.

Pick up an even number of stitches around the neckline to form the collar (again I didn't bother to count). - Use black yarn.
Work in K1P1 ribbing for 4 rows. BO all sts.

Put it on Frob and see how awesome he looks.
