So the past while I've been spending my time watching cool TV with my brother. J's great for my TV watching habits because though he's not as into it as I am he's good at suggesting shows that I might like (for example Stargate) and he takes advantage of my obsessions to be able to see the shows that he likes whenever we're in the same city. It's almost assured that whenever I go visiting him at his place, or he comes to mine that sooner or later he'll ask, "So, do you have any more House episodes that I haven't seen?" or "What about NCIS?" And then we'll watch whatever new episodes I have downloaded, laugh at mostly the same bits and have a good time. So here's a bunch of my reactions to all the things that I've been watching lately (mostly with J, but not all of them). There will be mild spoilers in these musings.
House M.D.
This I've sort of vaguely been watching with the brother because he's catching most of them as they air on TV. I have not cable and get only two channels so this is not an option for me but that's what downloading is for, yes? Tiding you over until you have enough moneys for the DVDs, or at least that's how I use downloading, anyway. But I digress. My latest thoughts on House aren't really all that distinct. I don't really like all the stuff that's happening with Tritter, but we're not supposed to anyway, and I don't seem to be as bothered by it as many other people in fandom are. I still love Wilson and this is definitely something that would happen between the two of them, because Wilson doesn't have infinite patience. The one thing that does bother me is all the detail they're putting into how much medication House is taking because even though you can see him drinking while he's taking the pills I always thought that he (being House after all) was hyper-aware of how much he was taking when so that, though it may not be on the recommended schedule, it was always just the right amount. Which is why him overdosing just doesn't seem right, unless there's something more going on than just pain issues and the crap with Tritter. Also I love the difference between normal mean House and the Mean House when he's in pain, because he's so much worse without his meds.
NCIS
I'm in love with this show. I love the humour, and the consistancy and the little character details that often aren't used in any type of story let alone TV. Lately there've been a bunch of really good episodes. I loved the team having to go to a Sexual Harassment seminar and making jokes about it for the rest of the entire episode. Abby being shocked that some people might not want to be hugged, and Jimmy confusing the seminar leader person by asking her about having to touch naked dead people: priceless. I also love Ziva getting all concerned about Tony because he's tired all the time and wearing a Hospital bracelet. I'm really looking foreward to everyone butting into Tony's business and finding out that it's his new girlfriend. The only thing I'd like to see more of is the repercussions of Gibbs being back in command after Tony took over during his "retirement". They did a really good job with the first few episodes where Tony and Gibbs were talking over each other a few times before Tony remembered that he wasn't in charge anymore, but now it's almost like it never happened and while I like it better with the gang all together like this there would be repercussions and I'd like to see more of them. Even in just backhanded comments (which they're all very good at after all).
Supernatural
I am so in love with Supernatural right now. J saw a few episodes of this a while back and told me "Hey, I just saw this really cool show and I think you'd really like it." And so now that we're at the Parent's and less than ten minutes away from the best rental place evar (possibly) we've started renting them and are now almost through the first season. It's SO good. It's about these two brothers who're on this crusade to find and kill the demon that killed their mother and on the way they're killing all the bad guys they can find. Spirits, demons, anything supernatural. I am currently at a high level of squee with this show. I love that they're brothers and they bicker. And I love that Sam (the younger) is taller than Dean. And I love that the reaction to any bad spirit is to cover it with salt and torch it. And I love Dean's music (says Sam "You really need to update your cassette collection." Says Dean "Why?" Says Sam "Well for one it's a cassette collection."), and his car (and I don't even like cars!) and the way that he can pull almost any kind of identification out of his glove compartment. And I love Sam and his geekery and puppy-dog eyes and nightmares. This is now on hte list of things i want on DVD hardcore. *Dwells in some more happy squee*
Rome
This is one of the other things that we've been renting at the same time as Supernatural and it is equally amazing, but in an entirely different way. It's so Roman! And I love all the politics. The sex is a bit much and J starts calling the Romans perverts, but that's not really terrible. Both J's and My favourite characters are Pullo and Vorenus who're soldiers that are caught up in all the crazy stuff that's happening in 50BC with Julius Caesar and Pompey and all that stuff. Favourite line so far is Pullo on the beach when he and Vorenus got ship wrecked: "I'm not supposed to die this way, something should have happened by now." I also very much enjoy Octavian because he's young and far too smart for his own good. This show reminds me why I'm a Classics student. The Classics Society at Uni were playing it but I kept being busy on the nights when they were meeting, but I wonder if they've finished the first season yet. If they haven't I'll go to see it again, because I'll have finished the last two episodes by the time I go back for sure.
Scrubs
This show is hilarious! It's a humour show with the perfect mix of seriousness (they are in a hospital after all). And I love JD's weird brain tangents that result in him saying the most ridiculous things, and Dr Cox going insane, and the Janitor. It's SO ridiculous that I don't have anything else to say about it. Just watch it and you will laugh.
due South
hobbitbabe got me the first season on DVD for Christmas, which is re-sparking my interest in this show. I used to watch it when I was a kid and I loved it. And I still do. Paul Gross being a very RED Mountie, both Canadian and American stereotypes being tossed around like nobody's business and a deaf half-wolf named Deifenbaker. How could you go wrong? Actually Deif is probably my favourite character, because he's just that cool and he understands the important things in life, like doughnuts. Favourite line, Fraser: "She shot my hat, Ray. I can feel the air coming in. How bad does it look?" Ray: "It looks bad." Fraser: "We'll have to go home and get my other one." Also I think the best thing about this show is how just about anything can happen and you don't really need to explain it. Fraser is haunted by his father's ghost, there's occasionally magic (usually inuit spirits) and when the actor who played Ray left the just brought in another one. Actully this is one of my favourite things ever, they brought in another Ray in canon, and everyone's calling this different guy Ray for the entire episode. Fraser gets all confused and complies all the evidence necessary to prove that this isn't the right Ray, including a mold of his teeth, his exact height, the size of his nose and things like that. Finally at the end of the episode Lt. Welsh gets the time to explain to Fraser that the old Ray is undercover and they've brought in this other guy as a placeholder so people won't be suspicious that Vecchio isn't around. It doesn't make a lot of sense but it's hilarious and I love it
So yeah, I like my tv. Actually it's really just stories that I have ridiculous love for. And it's so easy to get good TV these days. It's amazing. I love DVDs. Scarily enough there are actually other shows that I could mention (like Torchwood, and Dr Who and also how much I want more Jeeves and Wooster) but I think this might be enough insanity for the day.
(And if you;re thinking about watching any of these shows I highly recommend them! I bet you couldn't figure that one out on your own. :P)
