The text for my Rome class just described Agrippa as Augustus' "Henchman". It was in passing, so it doesn't mean too much. But I can't decide whether this is the best thing ever or the worst.

On the one hand I'm kinda offended on behalf of a guy who died over 2000 years ago. But on the other: henchman! It's such a wonderful description for their bizarre relationship. Also I'm trying to imagine what Agrippa would be like in the Henchmen's Union à la Dr. Horrible. ;)

Oh Really?

[livejournal.com profile] vermin_disciple keeps posting up choice tid-bits of academic writing. They're ridiculous, and I love them - although they also make me want to strangle the authors in the face (because everything is worse in the face. Except food - which is better).

I got one in my reading for my Anthro class in a chapter on Statistics and Measurement:

"We as archaeologists operate in a community of archaeologists who can agree about some things at some times."
- E. B. Banning, The Archaeologist's Laboratory, Ch 2, pg 8.

It's so true! And I love how it's basically saying that archaeologists bicker like small children, but using positive language.

At the same time - useless statements much?

We talked about "Materiality" and the meaning of "Function" today in class, and I was reminded of why I'm glad I didn't major in Anthropology. I can't handle those discussions about the meaning of "meaning". And whether or not culture deserves a capital 'C'. The buzz words kinda make me want to puke.

From Tessa who is one of the shortest people I know,

"But I can't reach things."

And then she left.
