aderam: (Impala)
Several months ago I told my friend T (co-founding member of the Coalition of Awesome *high fives!*) that I'd make her a list of some of the best Headstones songs to get her listening to the band. This probably isn't a hard thing to do, because she like this type of music and already loves Hugh Dillon (the front man) from watching Flashpoint. But in any case this is my Headstones pimping post. The Headstones are my favourite band, so choosing a reasonable number of songs is hard, but I'll do my best. I'm going to try to get in my favourites as well as a decent breath of the type of music they do. [personal profile] hobbitbabe, since you're also a Headstones fan, if I'm missing any songs you think are essential to the pimping experience, add a comment!

I like the Headstones because their music is loud and in your face, without just being screaming into a microphone. It's still got a lot of actual music behind it (clearly I'm an expert in music things). Hugh Dillon has an awesome voice. And a lot of the songs have some clever lyrics that aren't just about getting or losing love (like 90% of music - I have nothing against music about love, but there's plenty of other life things to sing about). It's powerful and loud and makes me want to sing along.

So, without further ado: The Headstones. Aka the shit.

The songs are in no particular order, but my choices were severely limited by what turned out to be available on YouTube. I put a list of the songs I would've included at the end. There are probably other places to find music on the internet, but I don't know them. So here's the best I could do.

Blonde and Blue - Nickels For Your Nightmares

I kinda love the fight scene with the "Roman" in this video.

Unsound - Teeth and Tissue

Yup. One of their best.

Cemetery - Picture of Health

I always felt that someone needed to vid Buffy to this song. Regardless it's one of my favs.

Fuck You - Nickels For Your Nightmares

Not the best sound quality and a little jumpy - but it's from a live performance and that is awesome. This song is the best for when you're pissed off and want to feel better about yourself. Sometimes you just need to tell people to fuck off.

Reframed - The Oracle of Hi-Fi

I'm no stranger, mis-behaviour, reframed, every single failure
Video Featuring Hugh with hair! (And what hair it is...)

Digits - Smile & Wave

Pretty Little Death Song - Smile & Wave

Why Hello there Callum Keith Rennie. Yes I will gladly look at a picture of you playing Billy Talent (and Hugh as Joe Dick) while listening to this song.

Tweeter and the Monkey Man - Picture of Health

Ignore the video. Just listen to the music. It's a cover of the Traveling Wilburys. And it's also good. I love the original too. Just a great ballad.

Physics - Smile & Wave

What could it have possibly meant/Now I'm left here with questions/And sudden descent/And all the injustice. The CD track for this song is actually super long and has a few extra songs on it. Including:

Which I actually like better than Physics - because: I'd give you anything/I'd give you a piece of my soul./'Cause it's the only thing I've got left I've never sold./I might have pawned it/Once or twice./Got it back intact./I'm here to comply.

Cubically Contained - Smile & Wave

And this one actually has a music video!

Been This Way For Years

A newer song. I actually don't have this one (yet). But it was one of the only actual music videos I could find on YouTube. So here it is! Warning for strobe-light action.

Hearts, Love & Honour - Teeth and Tissue

One of their slower songs.

And Bonus!Hugh Solo Work:
My Mistakes - Works Well With Others

And these are the songs I couldn't find on YouTube for the life of me:

Nickels For Your Nightmares - Nickels For Your Nightmares
Penny for your thoughts,/Nickels for your nightmare,/Dime for your dying dreams,/Dollars for luck & despair. - This is one of their weirder songs. It's a bit more spoken word. But I love the way Hugh growls out the words.

Without A Sound - Smile & Wave
she wore a beautiful dress to her own death/from the rocks to the beach into the ocean/coast guard said it's the strangest thing/she seemed to grimace, then to wink/but I knew it was a smile that had frozen - morbid, but well told.

Little Lies - Nickels For Your Nightmares
If I told you a little lie/It would be a story/Just stretch the truth a little bit

Supersmart - Smile & Wave
That girl is supersmart/You know you're never gonna catch her off guard/She's inflexible and the points she makes are perfect - I love both the admiration and the annoyance that comes through in this song. I know that girl. And she's awesome. But man she can be super annoying.

Picture Frame of Rage - Smile & Wave
Reporters on the TV/Well they're frightening but they're soothing/Pictures on TV/Pictures in my brain/Pictures of the nice things that have/Quenched the thirst for rage - Another good song for when your righteously angry.

Million $ Moment - Oracle of Hi-Fi
Actually I managed to find a video that has part of the song - and bonus random people jumping in mud puddles? - finding the songs was more difficult than I thought, okay.

And because I support Hugh's acting career and love this fake band (and have an unhealthy obsession with Callum Keith Rennie) - Hard Core Logo:

Finally, the Headstones talking about Hockey because you can find weird things on YouTube:

Hugh played at Harold Harvey! (And street hockey with Doug Gilmore!) I mean it's not surprising. The Harvey Dome was the centre of hockey in Kingston when I was playing too. (And Mum, no matter how many times you drive me by to prove me wrong, I don't care - Harold Harvey is still an ice rink. Domino Theatre can stuff it.)

I agree with you completely abut Hugh and about Harvey. The Headstones tour last winter is probably not a one-off so you should have a chance to see them sometime. In concert he is full of sweat and swearing and still lovely.

My favourite is Million Dollar Moment. You got all the other essentials except ... did you get Dripping Dime Sized Drops?

I know, and if I had kept listening this morning I would probably still be going, oh and that, oh and that.

But for a playlist to expose someone to who they are and why they're great, your list is a good gateway.

Also, I am sure it must have been because of you that I learned about them. So thank you.
